Mixing the "soil" on a large tarp is easy. Place the dry ingredients together and left various corners of the tarp to thoroughly mix the contents together before placing them into the box. Once a portion has been transferred from the tarp into the box, the entire tarp can be placed on the edge and the remaining mix "poured in" by lifting corners of the tarp again.
